Living a balanced and healthy life means that you have to intentionally limit your stress, and this isn’t always easy to do. Excess stress can cause many types of diseases like heart disease, headaches and asthma. Fortunately, there are several ways you can relieve stress with simple exercises you can do at home. Try out one or more of these stress-busting exercises today to create some peace and relaxation in your life.

1. Walking

A simple change of scenery can do wonders for your mind. Taking a walk outside allows you to slow it all down and focus on something else for a change. In addition, you also get the benefits of mild cardiovascular exercise when you walk. Getting into a regular routine of walking will help you limit your stress on a daily basis.

2. Tai Chi

It may be an ancient form of Chinese martial arts, but it works so well that generations of people still practice it to this day. Tai Chi is also known as “meditation in motion.” The beauty of Tai Chi is in the flow of movements you create with your body, which allows you to focus on the present (and your breaths) rather than your worries. It also allows you to build up your flexibility, increase your energy, and promote balance both physically and mentally.

3. Yoga

There are a few different ways you can practice yoga—from a gentle approach to more challenging exercise. Regardless of which practice you choose, you’re guaranteed to relieve your stress. Yoga centers your attention towards your body and your breathing. It’s one of the best forms of strength training; and with the strength you develop from carrying your own weight, you relieve physical tensions. The breathing techniques in yoga teaches you how to initiate relaxation, especially when you’re feeling particularly stressed. Yoga trains your mind to focus on what matters, and a big part of what matters is your body and mental health. 4. Meditation

Meditation isn’t the easiest thing to do. It requires a lot of patience, and regular practice of meditation has tremendous benefits to your body. When you meditate, you sit in a comfortable position and focus on your breathing. Most meditative practices also teach you to focus on something positive in the present and things that you can be grateful for. It promotes inner peace like no other helps you let go of stressful thinking and anxious tendencies.

5. Aromatherapy

In truth, adding aromatherapy to your life is probably the easiest way to promote less stress altogether. The use of essential oils for healing and stress relief is something that people have been doing for ages. It’s a natural way to help your brain activate positive responses. You can use essential oils for massaging your body to relieve stress, or you can mix it in with your bath water as well. You can also combine aromatherapy with other stress-relieving exercises to help give your mind a boost of positivity. Aromatherapy also promotes better sleep, fights off bacteria, and even relieve some pain.
