Q1: How does Unloct work?
Unloct is a subscription-based platform where content creators can monetize their work on their own websites. Once creators install Unloct on their website, paid subscribers are given exclusive access to that creator’s content. Subscribers pay one fixed price, and they get unlimited access to everything on the platform with their subscription. When a subscriber visits and logs into one of our creator’s sites, that creator gets paid.
Q2: Who can monetize with Unloct?
Anybody with a website! It can be monetized with Unloct if it can fit on a webpage. Artwork, blogs, original songs, indie films, cosplay, and podcasts just to name a few!
Q3: Why Unloct over existing monetization strategies?
I like to ask content creators to put themselves in their fans’ shoes. Currently, fans are inundated with content choices. And it goes beyond just streaming services like Netflix. With the emergence of social media and influencers, there are countless content creators trying to convince their followers to subscribe to their exclusive channels.
One Twitter user might see their favorite band promoting exclusive content to premium subscribers in one tweet, then their favorite podcast doing the same thing in the next tweet, then an influencer they follow is starting an online comic book or a cosplay photoset on yet another platform. Even if that person is a dedicated fan to all the above, they are unlikely to subscribe to them all. This goes beyond affordability, because most creators are offering these types of content at low prices. It has more to do with “payment friction” and mental overhead. Fans know from experience that once you subscribe to something, you will often only use it once or twice before taking a long break from it, maybe to return at some point way down the road. And they know it takes time and effort to track all their subscriptions; not to mention their corresponding usernames and passwords. The discomfort surrounding this experience is all it takes to turn away a willing and able customer, even if they have plenty of disposable income. Unloct solves this problem by allowing subscribers to support all their favorite creators with one subscription.
Q4: Won’t this lead to creators taking a paycut?
The per-customer revenue is likely to go down for creators who have an established fan-base. But for those creators I ask, “Would you rather have a bucket of dollars, or swimming pool full of pennies?” Because with Unloct, you will be exposed to more fans than ever before, and every time that fan consumes your content, you will get a portion of their monthly subscription.
Q5: How is payment determined?
Every month, all the content creators split the monthly net revenue generated from all Unloct subscribers (Unloct takes 5%, our payment processor also takes roughly 5%). The net revenue is split meritoriously (creators with more monthly logins get a larger slice of the pie).
